HP Next Gen Ficlet
Feb. 2nd, 2013 06:01 pmWell I've been thinking of next gen ideas for a while. But this scenes doesn't really fit for any of them. So I'm just going to stick it up here as its own little thing. Think of it as a next gen trial run.

It was his first breakfast at Hogwarts, Albus Potter thought. And he was most certainly not where he expected to be. He still hadn’t quite got over the shock of the sorting. The other lads of his house were nice enough. But they were as surprised that he was among them as he was to be there. He would get to know his housemates over the course of the year supposed, he wasn’t worried about that. There was something he was worried about though. He glanced about anxiously and then as usually his brother surprised him, ruffling Albus’ hair before he’d realised he was there and then sliding into the seat beside him, his red and gold tie looking highly conspicuous.
“So little bro,” James drawled. “Just when I think I have you figured you out and then you go and do this.”
Al made no response to this and just dug into his plate of eggs.
“Well I guess it makes sense kind of. I mean honesty and fair play I see, you always do hate when I cheat at games. But Hard work, you? I think the sorting hat must have made a mistake.”
The beginnings of a smile lifted the corners of Al’s lips.
“I work harder than you do Jamie,” He said softly. “I mean I know that’s not saying much but…”
James chuckled appreciatively.
“You’ll write Mum and Dad then?”
“I guess I’ll have to.” Al said gloomily.
“You’re not worried how they’ll react are you? Even after Dad had that chat with you on the platform?”
As a matter of fact. Al was worried. All his family had talked about Gryffindor non-stop and that occasionally mentioned Ravenclaw and Slytherin. No one had even mentioned this house in passing as possibility.
“Look, Dad’s going to be pleased as punch. I tell you, a couple of days you’ll have a nice letter telling you how proud he is and all the wonderful people he knew who were in Huffpuff and then snuffed it.”
Despite himself, Al’s heart lifted at the idea. James made things sound good, but then James always sounded so sure and confident, regardless of whether he was telling the truth or not.
“You really think so?”
“Sure!” James nodded emphatically. “you know Dad, his stories always end up with someone snuffing it.”
And with a smile and a light punch to his little brother’s arm, James wandered off to chat to Roxy at the Gryffindor table and left Albus among his new friends in Hufflepuff.

Date: 2013-02-02 06:26 pm (UTC)Yeah, there's a lot of freedom when it comes to Next Gen. I've not read a lot of it but I figured Al probably ended up in Gryffindor like his parents or Slytherin for the irony and because of the talk in the epilogue.
So I went for Hufflepuff to be contrary. Hufflepuff never gets any play. lol.
