Day 14 - Challenge withing a challenge. Challengception

In your own space, create your own challenge. Whatever your challenge is, and have fun with it! Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Lots of people have put up some very laudable challenges. Keep fandom going, review more, love yourself. I encourage you to follow these! Thy're good ideas but you don't need me to repeat them. How about a meme like thing?

If you like tell me:
-your favourite fandom
-your OTP
-strangest pairing you've done
-your favourite piece of head-canon.

 Day 13:
In your own space, set some goals for the coming year. They can be fannish or not, public or private. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Another difficult one for me. Making resolutions is no big problem, I did a whole raft of them last year. Here (f-locked)

Keeping them is a problem. I could copy and paste that list and all I'd have to do is change the number for May Madness, way down to last year's numbers because I still need to all that stuff.

So all I can resolve to do is try. Try to stay current in fandom, try to keep writing and try to do better at work and in real.

Day 11

Share a book/song/movie/tv show/fanwork/etc that changed your life. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

This is a question I feel really hard to answer. The smart-arse response is, of course, everything changes my life as a read it, just because before I hadn't read it. Star Wars and Star Trek were undoubtedly big parts of my formative period. The superhero media of the time. And Harry Potter. All things I'm still watching and enjoying today. But could I point at an aspect of my character or personality and say 'x work caused this' well I couldn't really say so.

Day 10
In your own space, share your love for a trope, cliché, kink, motif, or theme. (Or a few!) Tell us what makes it work for you, and why it appeals to you so much. Talk about what you like to see in fanworks featuring that theme most. Feel free to include recs and examples! Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Banter. I love Banter; Banter and Dialogue and quirky turns of phrase for the narrators. This is probably owing to too much Joss Whedon inspired works in my youth; Buff The Vampire Slayer, Angel, Firefly. (Never saw any Dollhouse strangely enough) As well as comic books and another big influence; Terry Pratchett. And of course Harry Potter the source canon for most of my fanfic is not above whimsy and snappy dialogue itself.

Why do I like it? It's key to characterisation and tone for a fic. Want a fun fic? Lots of fast banter. Even if you're writing a trope or plot or pairing people have seen time and time again if you can keep the flow going with some banter and back and  forth; they'll probably stick to it. The trickiest thing I find to do is to write a character who I think is habitually quiet and tight lipped like say, Blaise Zabini.

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you have created. It can be your favorite fanworks that you've created, or fanworks you feel no one ever saw, or fanworks you say would define you as a creator. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Going to do this with one old, one new and one in between. For those who don't know I mostly write Harry Potter erotica. (Not just a white card in Cards Against Humanity!) So here are some of my favourites that I've written.

Substitute My Coke For Gin, Harry/Ginny - Harry/Parvati - Harry/Ginny/Parvati, 16K, |LJ Part: 1 2 | DW Part: 1 2 | AO3
A secret from Harry’s schooldays stirs up trouble during his engagement to Ginny.

This is probably the best single thing I've written IMHO. It's certainly the longest. It's got a bit of everything. Plot, humour, characterisation and four separate and hopefully distinct smut scenes, it even fits with canon if you squint and pretend a lot of things happened between the lines of HBP.

Harry and Parvati are both now Aurors and meet for the first time in a few years. Harry with pleasant memories of Parvati from school is surprised and hurt when she gives him the cold shoulder. The reasons why also have a knock on effect to his current relationship with Ginny, and the pairings listed above should give a good hint to how it all gets worked out.

On The Dangers Of Whiskey & Slytherins, "Eighth Year" Hogwarts Students, 0.5K, R |LJ | DW | AO3
Harry isn't sure the way Spin the Bottle is supposed to be played but this is probably not it...
Written in 2014 for a Drabble Comm. A nice array of pairings of all kinds and a fun concept for why it all happened, I thought.

Moments, James Sirius/Dominique, ~3.2K, NC-17 |LJ | DW | AO3
James and Dominique have always known each other. Always liking each other is another matter.

My favourite Next Gen pairings. Next Gen have such flexibility and you can do a lot with these characters and shape them the way you like. This fic is a quick whistle stop tour of how I see a relationship between these two going. It's hopefully fun ad funny and a little saccharine sweet as well as I am a softy at heard.

Day 8

In your own space, share a favorite piece of original canon (a TV episode, a song, a favorite interview, a book, a scene from a movie, etc) and explain why you love it so much. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Harry Potter would be too obvious here. Suffice to say seven years  of fanfic writing implies a great love for that franchise. I've also talked previously about Radio shows like Just a Minute and Cabin Pressure that I love.

But what I really want to talk to you about is a movie: Stranger Than Fiction

I don't watch it very often, but it holds a special place in my heart. Usually when I watch films, I'm quite negative, at least when talking about them afterwards; what they did wrong, what they changed from the adaption, what annoyed me. Even films I quite like.

Stranger Than Fiction is a film I watched and had no negative comments on.

I mean there are some that can be made but at the time. Nothing. It just a sweet and heart breaking film. I wasn't a fan of Will Ferrel or Emma Thompson or Dustin Hoffman or Maggie Gyllenhaal before seeing the film, I think the only reason I saw got in on DVD to see it, was a trailer at the start of the Casino Royale dvd, so a victory for advertising there.

Any way, in it Will Ferrell plays a taxman who starts hearing Emma Thompson's voice who is a he put it is narrating his life "accurately and with a better vocabulary". Which is the concept that attracted me to it. But it's also about the taxman quitting his job, finding out what he wants from life and finding love. I guess it's a comedy of sorts, but a very dry one but extremely entertaining/

As I say it's a lovely film, sweet and touching and I don't want to spoil anything about it other than giving it a hearty recommendation.

Day 7:

In your own space, create a love meme for yourself. Let people tell you how amazing and awesome and loveable you really are. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so. Surf the comments and find people to give love to.

Well I wouldn't usually do this but there you go.

Day 5

Recommend a fannish or creative resource. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

You know I don't use a lot of resources. Without want to sound like a dick my chief one is probably google. Type in [fandom name] wiki and that gets you most of the information of whatever you could imagine.

There is also How to do Everything which is aptly name.

For my ambiguous stuff I'd post a topic here to see if people were interesting in talking about it

Day 4

In your own space, create a fannish wishlist. No limits on size or type of fanwork; just tell us what you’d like to see. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so. And if you grant a wish, do the same thing!

This is like the worst ever challenge. I'm bad at asking for stuff especially at the moment. I do have a likes post, at least.

So a personal wishlist:
1)More het fics.
2)More diversity in pairings.
3)Femdom is lovely.
4)Detailed reviews and Constructive criticism (in theory, in practise I might not be able to handle it, lol)

Day 3

In your own space, post recs for at least three fanworks that you did not create. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Rec # 1: Hit Me With Your Best Shot by SoftObsidian74.

You guys, this fic is a lot older than it looks! It got reposted to Ao3 in 2013, but really its from Adult-Fanfiction from circa 2010ish. It's a Harry/Pansy fic, she flounces in to his office and tries to tell him what to do and instead sexy times ensues. It's smutty and snarky and fun.

I particularly recommend it because it's the fic that got me into writing Harry/Pansy in the first place. That got me into to writing at all; that Harry/Pansy was the first thing that I had't read this and ended up writing my own Harry/Pansy piece, I wouldn't be writing this here today.

Rec # 2: The Scarab by [livejournal.com profile] bktheirregular  (who i only just saw has an LJ and way well be mystified at being tagged, if indeed they still check their journal)

This is a Buffy The Vampire Slayer/Stargate SG-1 Crossover, so very different from the stuff I read/write here. It has stayed bookmarked on my browser for quite some time now. It was recommended to me on another board as perhaps the best crossover between those two stories. And it shows. A Goa'uld turns up in Sunnydale, brainwashing vampires and demons to do it's bidding as it tries to take over the hellmouth. Buffy fights it and eventually SG-1 gets called into to help out. It's a very clever blending of the two shows; keeps everyone in character and hits several interesting parallels between characters and develops them all and doesn't break either canon, slotting neatly into the gap between s4 and s5 for Buffy and somewhere in early S4 for SG-1

Very fun, funny and satisfying read.

Rec # 3: Ask Lavender by [livejournal.com profile] ely_baby

This is the Definitive Hugo/Lily (Lugo) fic. When looking through my rec tags I was surprised to see I hadn't ever done a proper post on this one.

So just post Hogwarts Hugo and Lily move into Harry and Ron's old flat, Hugo wants to be a professional Beater and Lily plans to be a Quidditch Correspondent, but instead ends up writing an Agony Aunt column (the titular Ask Lavender). It's a novel length fic, crammed packed with sexual tension, jealously, and smut. There's a cleverness to the plot that allows the principal character to both have many steamy scenes while still having UST. The characters feel realistic and complex, by turns nice and kind to each other, and then jealous and brooding so there is a lovely dichotomy to their characters.

It's not a quick read by it is very much worth it.

Fandom Snowflake Challenge banner 2018

Day 1

In your own space, talk about why you're participating in Snowflake and, if you’ve participated in the past, how the challenge has affected you. What drew you to it? What did you take away from it? What do you hope to accomplish this year? Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I've never done it before, but I've seen people do it before and it usually provides a interesting amount of insight into them . 2017 was not a productive year for me fandom wise, so doing this challenge is something to keep me active and hopefully get the creative juices flowing.

Plus I saw nearlyconcious' post on it!

Can't promise how much of this 'i will actually do but I'll try to check in on it frequently.
