This another of the shows that I am a fan of but not in the fandom of so to speak. It's a radio sitcom made by BBC Radio 4. My folks often have the radio on and radio 4 has half hour comedy programs on weekdays at six thirty. Ranging from panel shows and topical comedy to things like this a radio sitcom about a charter plane service with a crew of four.
Now that I come to write this I'm not sure what I'm going to say that you couldn't find from wikipedia. But the cast consists of Martin the incompetent rule abiding captain played by no less than Benedict Cumberbatch of Sherlock/movies, Douglas the ultracomptent and schemeing co-pilot. Play by Roger Allam (not as famous as BC but gets around on British telly and has a part on Game Of Thrones as well) the ceo/stewardess, Caroline playd by Stephanie Cole and the cabin steward, man-child Arthur played by the writer/creator of the show John Finnemore. (i find it greatly amusing the weriter chose to make himself the idiotic member of the cast but then Arthur is a very lovable idiot)
There twenty-six episodes (well 27 since the finale was split into two) and they are alphabetically named after the destination the air firm is flying to. Some are well known places like Boston or Edinburgh and some places are obscure like Uskerty a tiny town in Ireland that doesn 't even have a wikipedia page.
Why do I like it? Its a very gentle, very BBC-y, british comedy. It has good characters and a cast that really gel well together. it has a lot of different kinds of humour from all the different characters, some of it deriving from their interactions, some from silly plots and some from them in character just trying to amuse themselves on long flight.
My least favourite is probably Kuala Lumpur, they don't actually go to Kuala Lumpur in that one. They only pretend to and the plot revolves around an illegal bar on the airfield the company works out of. The level this episode emphasises Martin's social issues and his awkardness is such the butt of the jokes that it seems more cruel than funny to me personally.
My favourite episode may well be Douz, where the crew are stranded in a tiny airfield by a tyrannical airport manager whiel tryin to pick up the scottish cricket team. Or Ipswich, where the crew who are pretty rulebending and improvising have to pass a safety certification test. OR St Petersburg where we meet Carol's ex-husband. There are a lot of episodes to love.
Why don't I write fanfic/count myself as in fandom, about this? Well I'd never be able to get close to John Finnemore's writing style to do it well. Plus out of four main characters, three are men and the lady is quite old. Call me shallow but those are not shipping options I fancy.
