braBa: Just got Real.
Jul. 18th, 2014 09:58 pmSo I watched Sunset early today and I just couldn't resist putting on 'One Minute' this evening.
And Holy hell that episode. The Ups and downs and the tension. I've said before I spoil myself too much so I knew it was coming. But it was still brutal.
I got to say though, considering their efficiency in earlier episodes. The Cousins sort of botched that job. The first guy stepping right behind him in just the perfect place to be car smooshed? Dumb. And only taking pistols when they could have had rifles? I guess it fits. They want the up close and personal revenge which is what foiled the second one.
Still, Hank. Poor Hank. He confesses, does the right thing about Jesse, and that what happens? Show does not believe in karma that's for sure. I really enoy his character. I should hate his cocky machoness but then he proved himself a decent sort in supporting the White's in Season 1 owing to walt's cancer and then the PTSD stuff starting season 2 helped as well. There's actual acting there. Given the kind of roles Dean Norris seems to play a lot and given what he's like in the audio commentary, i was thinking he's not so much an actor as just being himself on screen right? But there is a lot of stuff going on in his performance which is great.
So other things, Hank sudden agrees to the divorce in Sunset. What Gus said must have really pushed his buttons. I felt like I'd skipped an episode or something though. And he then meets Gale in his underground layer. As soon as I finished Sunset I was expecting Walt not to ultimately get along with Gale who has a lot more in common with him and want Jesse back, but I didn't expect it to happen the very next episode.
Jesse has two big hate-filled bile ridden speeches towards Hank and then Walt and they're pretty scary. Even more scary is that all it takes is a few kind words of grudging respect from Walt to make him fold completely and go to work.
Even more interesting is that Gus allows Jesse in. Is Gale still going to be there? Seems to me Gus isn't going to want three months of blue meth and then to be out of that business. Gale is presumably going to pull what Jesse did. Learn how to make meth as good as Walt and then cut Walt out of the loop. Gale seems like he's much passive and dependable and likelier to stay subservient to Gus.

Date: 2014-07-18 09:57 pm (UTC)'One Minute' is still one of my very favorite episodes. I loved Jesse's speeches, first when he's in blowfish mode, and then his rage filled one to Walt just crushed me. And all Walt has to do is treat him with some freaking decency and he could have a true loyal partner. Walt is so stupid.
I'm a big Hank fan. Some fans liked to pick at him, but I think Hank showed his decency fairly on. And his speech to Marie was really beautiful and beautifully done by Norris. The scene when Hank gets in the elevator, and Marie is there waiting for him, and as soon as the doors close he's bawling in her arms - it gets me every time. He's not always lovable, and he can be a pretty nasty guy when he wants, but he's always been the good guy.

Date: 2014-07-18 11:44 pm (UTC)Hank can definitely rub the wrong way. Especially with his casual racism and general dickish attitude. . But he definitely cares for his family and we see him do his job well. He's got good instincts and isn't zero tolerance. He'll let small fry, like the girl jesse swapped meth for gas with, slide if it'll get him closer to the real target. And when he does fuck up like this episode he cops to it. And really, its easy to understand why he was pissed in that scene, the trick hitting so close to home. Walt is just an asshole pulling that stunt.
I hit 'full measures' and...

And Hank quickly became one of my favorite characters on this show. I consider him the real hero. Dean Norris doesn't get enough props, IMO. He acts his ass off.
