hp_nextgen100's Prompt #341: "Recipe". Been ages since I used these two.

Dominique Weasley returned from St Mungo's dead on her feet after along stretch. She was greeted by an odd smell and a suspiciously quiet James Sirius Potter standing between her and their flat's kitchenette.
"Now, Nikki…" James said in a placating ton of voice that got Dom's back up. "I'm not asking you to do anything but I do need you to tell me that oven cleaning spell you have."
Dominique leaned to the side and gazed past James to look at their oven. There's was a slight haze in the air around it.
"What did you do?" she said.
"Well…" James said. "You've been so busy. And I wanted to do something nice. And I thought who doesn't like Cake? You know? And. And Well… I attempted baking."
Dominique was caught between a smile and a groan. She settled for ruffling James' auburn hair.
"Of course you did."
She dodged around James and crouched in front of the oven and pulled it open.
The burning smell intensified.
Inside, there was a cake tin, with some brown cake batter in it, and some more on the walls and a lot more of it congealed on the floor of the oven.
Next to Dom, James fidgeted, as she started at the mess in their over.
"I did say, that I wasn't asking you to clean up, right?" He said, bashfully.
"Yep, the cleaning guide's over there." Dom said, pointing to a shelf. "What was this supposed to be?"
"Chocolate cake!" James said.
"And you followed a recipe?"
"I did!" James said going pink.
"Hmm… did you use baking powder or baking soda?"
"There's a difference?" James said and then looked mortified.
"Never mind," Dominique said, turning to kiss him on the cheek. "Next time will be better. If we work together."
