Summary: Roxanne doesn't expect much from Al's birthday party until she spots one of the other attendees

rarepair_shorts. Just an excuse to throw some non-cursed child compliant Al & Scorpius headcanons in there, where they're neither BFFs or enemies.
Roxanne Weasley had prepared for Albus’ birthday party with unusual thoroughness, usually she was more of a rough and ready type of girl but well, a party was a party after all and it wasn’t like the life of a wannabe herbologist was overflowing with romantic possibility after all.
So out came the push up bra and the form fitting clothes, the make up and the potions to add lustre and even more volume to her hair. She looked pretty good all things considered even if she did say so herself.
She hadn’t expected much and unlike some people she could mention she wasn’t overly interested in any of her cousins but Grimmauld Place was overflowing by the time she arrived with more than just her and Al’s extensive family. Apparently lots of people liked Al enough to turn up to a party in his honour at least.
Unfortunately most of the just graduated Hogwarts set was full of brash, boastful dickheads who wanted to tell Roxy that they were on the cusp of a pro-Quiddich career at any moment or that they were Aurors about to send on a top secret mission they shouldn’t tell her about, or just that they had a drink with her name on it, which at the distinction of being the least appealing and yet most honest offer she’d had that evening.
By mid-evening, Al had disappeared entirely from view and Roxy was considering ditching the event when she spotted him; a tall aristocratic blond guy standing in a corner looking more or less lost. She picked up a couple of drinks, dodged another guy wearing too much deodorant and headed over.
“Hi, you all right?” Roxy said.
“Uh.. fine, thanks,” the guy said.
“You want this?” Roxy offered him a drink.
“Thanks,” the guy said again. Roxy wondered if this conversation was going to be worth it.
“You know Al from school?”
“Ah.. a bit, not a lot, we were partners a couple of years when our Houses had joint classes, Hufflepuff and... Slytherin”- he paused slightly before saying his house as if expecting it to be a problem. - “I’m Scorpius Malfoy.”
“Please to meet you Scorpius,” Roxy said. “I’m Roxanne Weasley. My friends call me Roxy.”
“Right, Roxanne, nice to me you too.”
Roxy grinned at him.
“No, no, you can call me Roxy. Please”
Scorpius’ pale skin had gone a pleasing pink colour.
“Oh right, err… Roxy,” he apparently had to force the nickname out. “Well anyway I don’t really know Albus I guess he just felt obligated to invite me.”
“Well I’m his cousin so that’s like the ultimate obligation to be here. You want to find a seat?”
“You want to talk to me?” Scorpius said, his eyes travelling over the assortment of big hunky, brainless hangers on she’d attracted over the course of the evening.
“Oh don’t mind them. They keep trying to impress me,” Roxy said. “But I want to be botanist their ideas of cool and mind are a little different.”
They settled down in a corner together. Scorpius at turned out was trying to escape the family tradition of being the idle rich by breaking into magizoology and they were still chatting in their corner when by the time nearly everyone else had gone home.
Roxanne ended up going home with a smile on her lips, an address for her owl in her pocket and a feeling that the evening had gone much better than she’d expected.
