I watched Disco yesterday and Picard episode 1 today.
This episode I really like. It has a peaceful explorer vibe with them trying to figure out how to communicate to the 10-C. It's a little silly but fun to have the interchangable bridge crew solve it at least in part as well as the actual expert and Zora.
I actually think the ticking clock and Book side of the plot aren't necessary, Discovery having first contact with this species just because it's Star Trek and they are explorers would be fine.
Saru getting advice on Vulcan women from Michael was fun.
Jett Reno really gets to shine and do more than just deliver snark and fix Stamet's relationship in this episode. She still has the snark, but is also calm, collected, resourceful both with the communicator and in convincing Book Tarka is not on the level. Her backstory (which is more meaningful than the random hints we get of the bridge crew's) is also vital and gives her compassion to get through to him. It's all well done.
I can't praise Book though because 'Tarka takes control of his ship and sabotages peaceful contact because he only cares about his only goal' is something that he really should have seen coming and taken steps to prevent because it already happened once a few episodes ago seriously man.
Still a solid episode even if the set up the finale was a little forced.

This episode on the other hand sort of bewildered me. We revist all the main cast from season 1. Elnor is now a cadet. Rios a Captain. Seven still a Ranger but with Rios ship. (and all the holocrew combined into one guy, boo) Soji and Jurati are on a goodwill tour for androids.
Picard is given a ust/romance thing with his Romulan Housekeeper Laris, plus hints at a bad childhood with his parents that seems at odds with TNG tbh. And there's much talking and pontificating about Picard's character and it all just seems a little laboured?
On a maybe humours note. Despite the title of the episode I immediately assumed Rios was in command of the Enterprise-F. Not a Stargazer.
The fleet scenes were cool. We got a nice variety of designs unlike last season and even some Sovereigns and I think a souped up Excelsior from Lower Decks I've read about on Memory Alpha.
So there's a weird transmission Picard has to investigate and predicatbly (because they showed it in the teaser) a borg vessel pops out. The kicker is the transmission was request to join the Federation. However then a queen beams aboard and tries to take over the ship/fleet and Picard ends up blowing up the new Stargazer. However rather than dying he ends up in a bizarro version of his house and Q appears and tells him he's an alternate timeline (well more poetically he says it's 'The end if the road not taken;) So I guess this season is cribbing from Tapestry instead of Measure Of A Man.
I did think it was odd Seven was rabidly anti-borg and Picard seemingly not. Yes he had some carthasis in First contact and liked the xBs it's not the same as The Collective Reborn. Also is the Queen is Picards mother with the 'look up' line?
It seems weird to me that's calm with a potential return of the Borg but totally loses his shit when Q turns up. Though he had blown himself up and found himself in a bizarro version of his house so I guess it's understandable.
