Finished off Series 3 tonight, didn't jot down things as I went, so here's a post fact mind dump:
I actually liked these episodes a lot more than I expected. There are two plot lines, Saru and Su'Kal on the planet, which I think was only in the second episode. And Osyraa and the Federation.
The first episode was actually the most interesting Osyraa and Vance have ever been to me. The idea that Osyraa and Vance genuinely want this alliance, it's kind of out of the blue, but it's a very intriguing idea. And the very unexpected thing for me, is that Osyraa was apparently entirely genuinely about this.
But the idea of having to take personal responsibility for her actions is her downfall. Bygones cannot be bygones, I don't want to get into real life thing, but it seems a very timely message.
In the second episode, this episode sort of devolves into action shlock. Osyraa vs the crew which Michael doing her best John McClane and turbo lift shennagians that strongly reminded me of the Colin farrell version of Total Recall.
Saru's plotline is rapidly fading from my recollection. Let me say that there's absolutely nothing wrong with it. It was well played by all concerned, and I need to look up played Su'Kal, but that's a very difficult performance to do through make up and it works. But it's a pretty standard predictable star trek plot to me. Good that they're doing it but really it could have been one episode.
Stamet's scene with wheelchair guy was a real highlight. His scene with Michael was.. interesting. Can see both sides, and I wonder if it was there to contrast the situation with Airiam last season where she chooses the mission over personal loyalty. Perhaps justifying Michael's captaincy? I kind of want to call bullshit that he's apparently happy to be under her command after that.
The space combat scenes seem really handwavey and act of plotty. The whole assembled starfleet group can't easily take on Discovery? The Vulcan ships show up but Michael then immediately capitulates when Osyraa threatens to actually shoot them. I don't know if it was supposed to be an intricate plan of Michael's to get them headed back towards the nebula?
The bridge crews heroics and moments still seem a little over done and cheesy to me. And I don't know if the events of the last three episodes are supposed to be a tacit acknowledgement that an Ensign as XO is silly. Under Tilly's watch the Discovery gets easily taken over, her escape plans don't amount to much and Michael takes over and save the day.
And yet Tilly does still come off as reasonably confident, assured and able of leadership and planning, and her easily taken over seems, well an act of plot. It's hard to know how it's supposed to come off you know? Tilly actually seems a good example of what happens if you take an competent officer with lot of potential and slot them into a position far above their pay grade.
Now, Michael taking over the position of Captain doesn't rankles as much as I expected. From spoilers, I was expecting the fact he was having personal issues with the mission and thereby not really be a fit Captain to be a lot more emphasised but in fact it was quite mild. I'm not sure Michael's heroics these last episodes actually makes her more fit to be Captain than the start of the season though.
And I really hope Saru's back next season. And not demoted to science officer again. How they would manage that though? Is Doug Jones even onboard for Series 4? :(
I found the ending a bit pat, I hope it's not really 'baddies defeated, federation is back' and next season's plot is 'rebuild the Federation' focused. But I did enjoy seeing the chap from the first episode back, that was a nice bookend.

Date: 2021-01-29 06:00 pm (UTC)Yes, last seasons was equally actioning but we added melodrama and the unnecessary killing of Cornwall. (I guess they were going to future and didn't care about existing supporting cast? Uh)
Yeah, it's choppy. It's like there's great ideas and potential there, that it never quite seems to live up to, or do what I'd like with.
