The flat was thick with fumes when Dominique came off of her shift. In their kitchenette, James had a small cauldron atop the hob and had the stubbly, tousle-haired, desperate look that came over him when he was trying to revise.
A second earlier, Dom had wanted only to a shower and go to bed. Instead she said;
“Potionology test soon?”
“Mmm-hmm,” James said, his jaw tight.
“What are you making?”
“Amortentia.” A pause. “And antidote, hopefully.”
Dominique winced.
“Are you sure this is right? I don’t smell anything.”
“It’s perfect,” James said.
The flat smelled like it always did.
