Where do my evenings go? (okay i know, watching a dvd, reading some fic, bandying ideas for may madness and not writing them.) Time for a quick official SED Post.

Hammered not my response to the new all Tory cabinet. But the third book in the Iron Druid Chronicles a book I got for my birthday and finished at 1am yesterday instead of sleeping up for work. I previously reviewed in this journal in a post I can't find.

The titular Iron Druid is Atticus O'Sullivan, an irish celtic druid who has survived more than 2,000 years drinking Tea. In this book, thanks to agreements he made in the second book, he has to invade Asgard. Twice. The first time to steal a golden apple, the second to kill Thor.

Yeah, kill Thor. In this book series, he's a quite an asshole.

To do the later, he teams up with many powerful beings and ends up fighting half the norse pantheon.

Now I actually found the first book, not quite to my liking. It tried just a bit too hard to make Atticus seem cool, which became a little grating, and the man had a list of powers and allies that made all problems seem to dissappear in short order.

By this book though, these elements have been significantly downplayed. And things are sufficiently more challenging for our Hero. Though to be fair, to achieve that he's fighting a bunch of gods on their home turf.

But the writing has matured enough, or i've got used to the style enough, now it now seems fun and not annoying. To its credit it mixes and matches it mythologies well and merges them into its own style. And even has Jesus Christ appearing as a character and I think any portayal of him takes guts from a writer. Even a positive one as seen in this book.

The Team Atticus assembles is full of interesting characters that are his peers basically, and they each take over the narrative for one chapter to explain exactly why they hate Thor. Adding variety to the novel without them overstaying their welcome.

All in all a surprisingly decent, light, read.

Ok, I'm glad you're liking the series more now than you did after the first book. :)

This book is probably my least favourite of the series so far but it was still enjoyable to me and introduced some really fun characters like Perun. I adore him.

What I like about Atticus is that, while he has weathered many a storm and done a lot of things over his long life, he is in no way infallible or a Gary-Stu. I love that he's a bit annoying to those around him, is often wrong or makes the wrong decisions, makes promises in the moment that are difficult to keep over time, and then subsequently gets his butt handed to him by people who are better. I love that he knows there are people better than he and that in the grand scheme of things he owes his success at life from running and hiding. It humanizes him a great deal.

Tricked (the next book) might be one of my favourites, if not the absolute favourite.

Definitely. I can understand why he seemed perfect and thus annoying in the first book. I appreciate that what makes him likeable throughout the series is that he makes sooooo many mistakes. Almost every decision one after the other is the wrong one. But it makes it interesting when he has to clean up (as best he can) the messes he makes.

Yeah, but to be fair, the people he owed favours were not the kind of people you reneged. Gods and the like have funny ways of exacting revenge. He was between a rock, a hard place and a thunder god or two.

He really does need a new approach and it is short-sighted. But I guess character flaws are character flaws. Some of those promises he sees that they will come back to bite him later. I think, for the most part, he's just trying to see how he can clean up one mess with as little collateral damage in the future.
