On Inspiration

Just been thinking about inspiration a lot, recently. And how weird it is.

Owing to the fact that i really should be doing more academic work than fanfic writing, I stuck both my on-goings 'on-haitus.' and since then ideas have been occurring to me much more frequently. Could just be my normal method of procrastination and getting away from the research proposal module. I did a taught MSc in part because I didn't want to do research.

So any way, for the moment ideas are popping in my head for Harry paired with any girl you can imagine. Ok that's not true. I draw the line at umbridge or aunt petunia or McGonagell or someone.

But Daphne Greengrass (obviously since I'm writing that one in Dribs n drabs) ,Susan Bones, Astoria Malfoy, Narcissa, Katie Bell, Angelina Johnson. Sure. Of Cause most of those are going nowhere. But still.

I'm getting off topic. I'm just wondering where everyone gets their ideas from. I think I have a nasty habit of reading other peoples fics and then nicking the pairing and going my own way with it.

DMDT was basically me looking at Harry/Tonks fic and thinking 'well i like the concept but the implementation is way off' and going from there.

Though a lot of my fic ideas, I start with the pairing I want/has been requested and then thinking 'but how on earth can you make that make sense?'

Anyone else want to share?

I work on fic ideas in a similar way sometimes. Other times I'll be reading/thinking about something totally different and I'll think, this would be an interesting thing to think about in a fanfic, and then my imagination starts to fill in the blanks from there. I feel sad that there isn't more Harry/insert mentioned female type fics out there...I feel like most shippy Harry fic is H/D, H/G, or H/Hr. There's so much you can do with the lesser-known female characters, but I don't think many people are as interested in that route.

Amusing there;s a fic on AFF that describes H/Hr as the fandom's 'most hated pairing' I always though that was the canon's pairings.

One of the advantages of using lesser-known characters is the amount of wiggle room they have. I love Harry/Pansy fics, and dislike Draco/Hermione fics. Yet they're pretty much the same dynamic. Except Pansy's got enough wiggle room in her character that I buy it. But Draco is well enough defined for my 'characterisation sense' to start crying to high heaven if he gets any action.

I feel the same way when it comes to H/P and D/Hr. We know less about Pansy, so there's more room for the author to make it work, but I don't have any of the same feelings toward Draco. We pretty much know what his character is like and Hermione is the LAST person I'd pair him with.

But I'd love to see Harry with Angelina, mostly because I've never read that pairing before and I'm sure that (based on how much I loved your SC entry) I'd enjoy your take on them.

I think Draco's ideal ship is the canon one; someone we never heard of. For all Pansy's fawning over hum, I don't think we ever say much affection going the other way.

That one and Neville/Hannah are interesting because the books in noway foreshadow them. Which is good, I mean how often do people really marry the people they fancied in school?

Of course it doesn't work that way for main characters.

The Harry/Angelina thing was just something that came to mind in relation to harry_submits a sort of domineering captain Angelina taking Harry in hand sort of thing.

There was a Harry/Angelina at harrysubmits? Because I thought there was all of two stories and one drawing that involved Harry in a het scenario.

Whichever pairings you pick, please bombard AFF with them because that site has turned to complete shite. My favorite character can only be paired with men, apparently, when it comes to the stories submitted there. I am so sick to death of the slashers. I am about done with this stupid fucking fandom.

As for inspiration, I find that life is good for that, too.

Alas, no Harry/Angelina at harrydsubmits. Just an idea that came to my mind when I was thinking about the possibilities of a submissive Harry.

speaking of AFF, have you managed to get back into your account there?

Clearly we need to start some kind of 'hetero kinky harry dark fest with out drarry or snarry'.

Wow. That fest is perfect. And has three replies. Can kind of see why the mod dropped it after one round... Perhaps something less demanding than a bigbang is needed.

And yep. It's Plummer playing the main Shakespeare quoting villain of Star Trek VI. Because everyone in Star Trek is supposed to quote literature.
