If ASoIaF ends up actually going for a happy ending its characters have thorough worked hard for. Then one thing I'm hoping for is Tyrion and Sansa to reunite. There's hints from both their PoVs that its at least conceivable.
But yeah, the thing with ADWD is just how unpleasant Tyrion's PoV has become with his self-loathing and whores obsession taken up to 11. It makes sense but its urgh.
As for Jon well I may have been affected by reading spoilers but a lot of his chapters seemed very similar. He tries to do the right thing for the watch and the realm even in the face of his position. Bowen argues. Jon gets his way. Knowing whats coming you can see him accidently driving everyone away from him. And also knowing from the other chapters his hopes about Arya are utterly face is another twist of the knife in his chapters.
I've tried re-reading ADWD but its darn hard going. Thanks for the fanfic recs. I shall try to check them out some time.
I definitely think Tyrion and Sansa will see each other again, but in no way do I want them to be a couple. There is just too much bad blood between their families, and I want Sansa to either have a happy marriage, or none at all. Tyrion's "whore obsession" as you wisely put it is what drove me crazy.
Part of Jon's problem is that he tries to do the right thing in general, instead of trying to do the right thing for the watch. For example: his quasi-friendship with Stannis, the way he handled Alys Karstark, his perspective on the wildlings. The thing with Arya is like the ultimate temptation for him: she was the one person at Winterfell he felt the closest to.
