Part 1 of 2 of the finale. Which probably tells you most of what you need to know. It’s fine as a part 1, I guess.

---

So there’s plot and there’s character stuff.

The plot is… Caleb finally finds his mum at the same time as Nus Braka enacts his evil plan. Leaving Athena being the only ship able to stop said plan next episode.

The character stuff… well Caleb has to chose between his mum and the Academy, and explodes at the others when they object to him picking his mum. He changes his mind and goes to rescue them when they are in trouble. Given the title of the show… well it’s obviously where he’ll end up. It’s less clear if there’s more to his mum and Braka/the Vennari Rel that meets the eye or if she really is innocent. Pleasantly surprised she really had been sending Caleb messages all this time.

Of note is new SAM. Who is different from Old SAM, turns out old SAM got her wish and new SAM is less nice and bubbly and naive and is much more of a rebel along the mould of Caleb himself. She wants to be more independent and wants a single room away from Genesis. There seems to be some friction there because Genesis doesn’t seem to get new SAM is not old SAM. (Between this and Caleb throwing insults at her, Genesis had it rough this episode.)

Ake chases down the cadets in the Athena while Braka’s plan enfolds. He’s englobed the whole federation in superduper omega mines that cut them off and will destroy subspace/warp travel if detonated. This is… silly and dubious considering scale. How many mines would he need, how many did they have on the starbase? Has he spent all this time mass producing them or something. Why was the federation making weaponised omega anyway?

In chasing the cadets the Athena is outside the boundary. It’s not mentioned but the Discovery and it’s go anywhere drive is of course perfect to circumvent this and help out. Would be pleasantly surprised if it cameoed or appeared in the finale.

Ake rescues the cadets and Caleb’s mum, so there’s a great show down at the end where they meet and great wordless acting from Tatiana Maslany as Anisha finds herself in Starfleet hands once more.

So all right set up, aside from Braka’s plan, I hope they nail a landing next episode.

As ever though I'm beating the "this needed more episodes" drum. They do not feel like they've been there a year. And an episode with new SAM before the finale would really have helped.

And a genesis focus episode, dammit.
