harry100's Prompt #348: "Elite"
- - -
Auror Harry Potter paused for a second, looked at what he was doing, looked at the giant pile of scrolls in his in-tray and not for the first time, he wondered why he was there.
Well, why he was working late that particular evening was because his boss was ill and Harry was filling in.
In general though, Harry didn’t have a clue. It’d just been something he’d always planned to do, ever since a Death Eater had told him he’d make a good one.
Harry ran through his hair, had he really taken the first suggestion he’d ever got?
It wasn’t like working for the government should have sounded appealing to a fourteen-year-old. Especially to one, who had been screwed over by the Government time and time again, Harry thought.
He’d always said, it was because it had been his destiny to fight Dark Wizards, or one particular Dark Wizard in fact but Harry had seen him off long before he’d had to get a job.
Others had told him it matched his “saving people” thing, but did “saving people” have to involve so much paperwork?
It wasn’t like any other job wouldn’t have had downsides, Harry told himself.
The longer Harry thought about it, the less satisfied he was. He remembered the actual first thing he’d been told about Aurors, that they were “the best of the best, the elite, you know?”
Had that been what he’d wanted? For people to think he was elite? More than just a sad backstory and a prophecy? Was he that egotistical? He knew people who thought so... and a hat.
A nice thirst to prove yourself came the words from a lifetime ago.
Harry sighed and pushed the thoughts away. All the introspection in the world wasn’t getting this paperwork done.
