But where do hp fanficcers get the idea from that the Headboy and Girl get their own personal rooms from? It's something I've seen quite a few times but I can't remember anything like that in canon? Or are boarding schools really like that.

Or is it just a plot convenience?

But what are the alternatives? They have a night of passion in the Astronomy Tower? They have a tumble on the grounds? They floo to a more private location? They check in to the Hog's Head for an hour or two?

I think the more appropriate question here is: Why are your characters Head Boy and Head Girl? ;D

lol. Those first two at least sound okay to me. Well I often see it in Dramione's so its an excuse to throw them together so they overcome they're mutual dislike in a way that would never happen in canon.

And of course they have to be Head Boy and Head Girl. They are the brightest witch and wizard of their age!

It's not a trope I'm planning on using. ; Though tbf I would like to see more school fic over the post-war fic that seems to be everywhere now.

lol no. But when I dipped my toe in at random on AFF or Smutty_claus that always seemed to be a thing there. Maybe it was just co-incidence.

I, too, get nostalgic for the school fic of yore. *sigh* really there's only one solution in fandom if you want something. Write it yourself. (or smut-beg your friends *flutters eyelashes at you*)

It is definitely fanon, there was quite a bit of sporking about it at this one fanfic community I followed.

However, I can see where people would think that. After all, Prefects do get certain perks of their position such as the Prefects bath. So people might think Head Boy/Girl get even better perks.

Plot convenience, usually for the sake of smut, most often found in Dramione. That pairing needs all the help it can get to get off the ground.

I don't remember there being any reference to it in canon. Normally when I see a plot device like that it's a sign of a poorly constructed story--you see it sometimes in James/Lily fic as well.

As for when/where students would be most likely to do it: empty classrooms, on the grounds if it's warm enough, in Quidditch locker rooms if they're on the team, those prefect bathrooms, and I'm sure there are students who try and make out in quiet sections of the library. Plus, the girls can go into the boys' dorms, so you would just have to find time when all the other roommates would be out doing something.

That's all I can think of but I'm sure there are other places. With a school full of teenagers it must be happening somewhere.

At least James and Lily were canonically head boy and girl. Which is something.

As for places I guess transfiguration helps a lot in finding a place to get it on. And the room of requirement is ideal for the select people who know about it.

Or they could just do it in the boy's dormitories behind the bed curtains and be very very quiet. (or just exhibitionist i guess)

If you were behind the bed curtains with a silencing spell that could guarantee a degree of privacy, but it could still be really awkward if a friend came looking for you and tried to open th curtain lol

I don't recall it ever being in canon. I don't think it's a boarding school thing either. It's a cute incentive for doing well in school, though. I think it's just a plot device, especially when the plot involves teen sex. A private room makes for convenient shagging. I admit I use it as a plot device too but I think it's just a ficcers thing.
