neville100's Prompt #570: "Prophecy"
- - -
In his sixth year of Hogwarts, Professor Dumbledore invited Neville Longbottom to his office to tell him everything. He sat Neville down and explained the prophecy: that one born at the end of July, whose parents had escaped Voldemort three times would have the power to defeat him.
"And that meant me?" Neville asked.
"The odd thing, Neville" He said softly, "is that it may not have meant you at all. Sybill's prophecy could applied to two wizard boys. We tried to protect both your families. We failed."
"And the other boy was?" Neville forced himself to say.
"Harry Potter."
Neville rocked back in his seat, stunned to his core. Harry Potter, it could have been Harry sitting here instead of him with a scar carved across his cheek.
Harry in year, a nice guy who lived for flying, who's parents had doted on him every day until Hogwarts and the worse hardship he'd known was visiting his cousin for Christmas and worse flaw was flaunting his family money treating his friends to things. He could've lost it all.
Neville's jaw clenched. Maybe it was better this way, after all who could taken seriously "Harry Potter, the boy who lived?"
---
Endnote: I tried to keep it light for this but it barely scratches the surface of what could be done with the senario (And I'm sure people have). Would Neville go through each book? Is Snape about? How would Voldemort come back with no wormtail? Really glossed over all that here.
