The pub had been loud and crowded and left Harry Potter feeling drained and rather sticky. He kicked off his shoes, pulled off his shirt and collapsed face down on his bed.
"Very alluring, Potter," teased Pansy Parkinson, following him into the bedroom.
"Yeah, I'm irresistible." Harry said.
"You don't have to tell me that, Harry," Pansy laughed, "despite what your friends think."
"Oh?" Harry rolled on to his side to look at her curiously.
"Well they seem to think I'm trying to make a fool out of you."
Harry noticed that Pansy's tone was pitched with decidedly artificial sweetness.
"Ah," Harry said to Pansy as she sat on the edge of the bed. His fine investigative instincts at work.
It had been the first night out that they'd been on as a couple with his friends. Evidently, words had been spoken when he'd been away.
"I didn't notice any hex marks when I got back from the bar. On either side." He said. "They can't've been that harsh."
"I don't care what they think," Pansy declared, in a tone that said quite the opposite. "I care what you think."
"That's good to know," Harry said, although it seemed inadequate.
Looking at Pansy, it was clear to Harry that some gesture was required. He pulled himself into a more or less upright position and sat next Pansy, wrapping an arm about her shoulders.
"You're not planning to make a fool out of me." Harry said.
"I could be for all you know."
Harry pinched his nose and tried to think how to explain.
"Even if you were, I'd rather have been a fool than stopped believing in second chances."
Pansy looked at him.
"You're a very odd person, Harry."
"Granted. Now, lets go to sleep."
They did, curled up together.
