Star Trek Discovery S5E1&E2

Well Disco's back for it's fifth and final season. Spoilers under the cut.


Plenty of TNG references and fanservice here, a little to Picard by way of consequence. This time they are hunting down technology a Romulan found from the Progenitors from TNG's The Chase. It's got a nice treasure hunt vibe going on.

One of the bit characters is a Soong Type Android with Data style make up that was created after Picard's Synth ban was dropped, Alton Soong is name dropped and it feeds into Stamets' arc of wanting to be remembered for something. Apparently as consequence of the prototype and Tarka going missing at the end of last season the spore drive is no longer in development. (preserving Discovery's unique status at least)

Tilly's back in the cast, Saru seems to be leaving again. Though hopefully he's staying on the show.

Once again, they don't really get how chains of command with another Captain of much greater seniority than Michael becoming her first officer.

It does still tend a bit too much the characters emoting and shilling each other but it's been reasonably good fun so far. Not too much to say though.

Oh, thanks for reminding me about the whole thing re: Stamets wanting to be remembered for something. I somehow forgot that. I also somehow forgot whether or not Michael and Book had broken up or... what was going on there? I really like them as a couple but I'd settle for them for friends as well. It was a little jarring to get that scene with "we saved the settlement! Wait, let's talk about us." Hmm.

I admit Discovery sucked me right back into the feels though re: Michael and Saru. I liked the treasure hunt vibes too. I also thought it was a good twist for Michael to pick Raynor as her Number One. He's a little Pike-ish without being Pike and I'll be curious to see where that goes.

I was relieved to see in the trailer that Reno will be back, because I love scenes with her and Tilly.

You know I don't remember precisely what the deal with Book and Michael was said to be at the end of last season. They'd been working cross purposes but still having feelings most of it after all.

Raynor should be an interesting foil for Michael, I agree it's just... the chain of command does not work that way. Lol. It's only a tv show though.

Oh! Yeah Reno's always fun. Alas only 10 episodes this season, not much time to fit everyone in. (I don't know why Disco seasons have gotten shorter and shorter or why 10 episodes is the new standard, *sigh*)

I had to go back and look but I think he had to take off because of the whole Federation thing? I don't know why they're interacting like they broke up, though. Maybe we'll get more info next episode!

Heh, yeah well Discovery can be funny that way but I'll give it a handwave.

Ten episodes! Oh geez, I missed that part. I wonder if it's similar to British shows that ten to have shorter seasons? No clue.

Yeah, I guess it's part of the fact that Scifi is very expensive and they're tried to position it as like prestige high quality mini series type deal.

I miss the long seasons where they had to get creative with costcutting bottle episodes tbh.
