Yeah I actually watched Lower Decks after they crossed over to Strange New Worlds. It's alright, gets better as it goes along. (I doubt this will interest my HP friends and feel free to miss it as I'm sure you realise)
Title: I.D.I.C
Rating: G
Characters & Pairing: T'Lyn, Durga, Beckett Mariner
Word Count: 1,200
Content: Vulcans, dialogue, characterisation, headcanons maskerading as fic.
Disclaimer: The characters, settings, Star Trek: Lower Decks and the Star Trek Franchise as a whole are owned by CBS and not by me. I make no profit from writing this piece of fanfiction.
Summary: The Cerritos and the Oakland go on a joint mission, afterwards Lt. Durga tries to talk to T'Lyn, Beckett interferes.
A/n: Set early season 4.Not really spoilers for season 4 but some musings in the aftermath of episode 5. Using Durga as a stand in for own thoughts here because while there are a few background vulcans on the Cerritos I don't think any of them have names. It kind of got a long way away from me as I wrote it.

Provisional Lieutenant Junior Grade's Log 58761.4
The USS Cerritos has rendezvoused with the Oakland to provide assistance to the colony world Setlik II. The combination of two California-class crews meant the work was finished with optimum efficiency. Therefore our Captains insisted that unnecessary joint socialisation time was in fact necessary and mandatory.
T'Lyn entered the mess hall of the Cerritos frowning microscopically at the usual cacophony of the ship's crew. In this instance it was even more severe as a considerable contingent of the Oakland's crew was also in attendance.
Scanning the crowded room, T'Lyn tried to see one of the Lieutenants, she regular served with. Although they were loud and aggravating it was logical to seek them out in particular as familiarity with them made them marginally more predicable than strangers.
T'Lyn located the quartet and approached then but as she neared their table another officer stepped out and greeted her. The office was tall Vulcan woman in a blue science uniform with the two full pips of a Starfleet Lieutenant. Her was typically short and efficient but with prominently forward swept side locks.
"Greetings, I am Lieutenant Durga, science officer of the Oakland" she said in a serene contralto. "I do not believe you were on the Cerritos in our last encounter."
T'Lyn felt herself stiffen and noticed Beckitt Mariner frowning slightly in their direction.
"Incorrect, I believe we were both on the Cerritos in the aftermath of the attack on Douglas Station by the Aledo"
"I stand corrected," Durga replied.
"In essence you were correct," T'Lyn forced out. "I had only just the crew at that point and had no significant interaction with it or you at that point. Apologies."
"None are necessary."
"How may I assist you, Lieutenant Durga?" T'Lyn said, warily.
"I require no assistance. I only wished to make a social enquiry. You are a provisional Lieutenant Junior Grade, I surmised then you are on loan from another service. Such situations are rare."
T'Lyn did not wish to speak to Durga of her estrangement from the Sh'vhal, however she also did not wish Durga to think she was un-Vulcan enough to lie. She took refuge to in Vulcan hints to speak the truth in very small amounts.
"Yes."
If Durga recognised the hint, she did not act upon it.
"Which service?"
"The Vulcan Fleet," T'Lyn was forced to admit.
"Curious-" Durga began but was interrupted.
"T'Lynnn!" Beckett Mariner hollered uncomfortably loudly next to them. "Don't tell you know her? Catching up with old friends?"
"I do not." T'Lyn stated, flatly.
"Lieutenant Junior Grade Beckett Mariner," said Durga, with clear, to T'Lyn, dislike. "my captain will be pleased to see you have been promoted."
"Whereas you're not you mean?"
"I have no strong feelings about it one way or the other," Durga said with studied neutrality.
"What do you want with T'Lyn then?" Mariner said hostilely. Impossibly, T'Lyn got the impression she had picked up on T'Lyn's own discomfort.
"I was inquiring why she had left the Vulcan Fleet, transfers from the Vulcan Fleet to the Federation Starfleet are exceedingly rare."
"She doesn't need to tell you that," Mariner said.
"Indeed not."
"Your concern is noted-" T'Lyn started to say.
"Your people treated her like crap." Mariner continued over her, flatly contradicting her previous sentence.
"My people?" Durga said. "I am in Starfleet."
"You know what I mean," Mariner howled. "She saved that ship and they kicked her out!"
"An accurate assessment," T'Lyn said. "Though not how I would have phrased it."
"What did you do?" Durga said.
"I devoted my duty time to improving ship's sensors rather than my assigned duty." T'Lyn confessed in her most serious tones.
"Why let you find us and pull our asses out the fire with pakleds!" Mariner interjected.
"A typical vulcan science cruiser would not withstand a pakled attack for any great duration," Durga noted.
"I had devoted my off duty time to a program that would drastically increase the cruiser shield durabillity and recharge rate." T'Lyn said."It gave us an advantage in combating the pakled clumpship."
"Yeah we kicked ass!" was Mariner's aside.
"On my vessel, I would cite that as original thinking and valuable initiative in a junior officer," Durga stated. "I suspect on a Vulcan ship it was not rewarded."
"Why do you think she'd here?" Mariner said.
"Yes, it is logical." Durga stated.
"Wait, what?" Mariner stated, "You don't agree with him?"
"You appreciate T'Lyn's activity. They did not. Is it not better she is in Starfleet?"
"Well… I…" Mariner spluttered.
"Where do you wish to be, Provisional Lieutenant Junior Grade T'Lyn?"
"I wish to return to the Vulcan Fleet, I was transferred against my wishes."
"That is logical. The Vulcan Fleet's position is logical. A crew of identically trained officers of equal temperamental will operate quickly and efficiently, they will each know how the others will react at all times, aiding in cooperative effforts and reaction time."
"I agree," T'Lyn stated, straightening at the praise of her home fleet.
"Yet Starfleet is also Logical. The breath of experience and different reactions of a diverse crew means a wider range of situations are handled effectively. A starfleet ship is often able to counter threats and hostile situations in unexpected and novel ways."
"I agree," T'Lyn stated.
"You can't agree with both those things? They're complete opposites! What they are both logical?" outburst Mariner.
"Logic is the beginning of Wisdom, not the end," T'Lyn said quietly.
"Quite so." said Durga."Both fleets are valuable and meaningful endeavours. The Federation is well served in having both. Infinite Diversity in Infinite combination Lieutenants. I see your captain's logic-"
"so you do think he was right!"
"-but not his ethics. I think you will be a valuable asset to any ship that has you Lieutenant T'Lyn. I think you will do well here. However I would never transfer you without your consent with out dire need that I do see."
"I concur with your assessment," said T'Lyn relieved.
"I have no great influence with Vulcan High Command," Durga continued. "I do have some compatriots in it's ranks though. I could reach out to them and attempt to aid your reinstatement if you request it."
T'Lyn was quiet for a long time.
"I do not wish to do so now but I might wish to do so at a later date if that is permissible."
"Of course."
"You're going to help her go back to those dicks?" Mariner interrupted.
"Would you not Beckett Mariner?"
"Well if that's what she wants but-"
"I would expect nothing less from a Starfleet officer," Durga said. "A vulcan fleet is built on dispassionate logic. A Starfleet one on understanding, compassion and friendship. We would help someone achieve their goal even if we thought it illogical or detrimental to ourself if it were not immoral or injust. You can tell from which Fleet I am in,which I value. Good day to you both."
Mariner spluttered at the abrupt denial but T'Lyn gave her a salute.
"Live long and prosper, Lieutenant Durga" she said.
"Peace and long life." Durga replied.
For once, T'Lyn had meant the salutation entirely honestly.
