An enjoyable episode. Spoilers under the cut as ever.
This episode really worked for me. More Detmer is always nice and little more of her backstory. All the ongoing character plots with Culber and Saru/T'Rina were worked in almost seamlessly for a change. And Reno's moments with Adira were well done. (Though good that Reno presence ends up being more plot relevant than just to provide snark and dry wit which is sometimes the case) Adira's final scene with Detmer feels like something they would previously have done with Tilly.
I was inclined to be a bit exasperated with the start when they make clear that eveyr second counts and then waste time pontificating with all the delegates before departure but it does set up the plot with the Earth General and Book, so there's that.
The desert location they initially land looks suspiciously similar to where Tilly crashed a shuttle in her last episode.
The only other thing that kind of bothers me is Michael insisting at the end they must find a way to communicate with 10-C even if they don't care about the damage they cause. I guess because they are massively technologically advanced a fight would not go well but every star trek series ever including previous series of this one have conceded there is a time for legitimate use of force and conflict, even if it is a last resort.
