How frustrating. A similar thing happened to me at my old apartment. Our fridge was too cold, so all of my food would freeze. Yogurt, jello, milk, anything with liquid. My orange juice would be a solid block of ice. I kept trying to adjust the thermometer but I think it was just broken.
My current apartment has a missing shelf in the fridge. There's a track where a shelf used to be and a frame, but the actual shelf is gone. At first I thought it was just my bad eyesight but then I felt around like "wtf where'd the shelf go?"
If it's cold enough you could always store things outside. I've been to parties where people stick the beer bottles in a snow drift to keep them cold.
