Complaining

So the masterlist for smutty_clauswent up. Hooray?

Now at least I can talk about my fic. Which I realised had the dubious distinction of having the least reviews of any fic in smutty claus this year. (2 before reveals) Woo! That plus the whole commenting thing = my ego is very bruised at the moment. And neither of those reviews was from the person it was written for. So that was sad, maybe starrika was in 'if you can't say anything nice don't say anything' mode?

So there are some mitigating circumstances for this; It was pretty rare pair; Harry/Lavender, it was longish, 9K words and it went up on Christmas Eve itself, when everyone was busy with real life and probably would be for a few more days at which time the fic would be buried under lots of other updates.

On the other hand, I should face the fact that maybe it wasn't very good.

For the next part of the post i want to try and cast a critical eye on my own fic, since i am so critical of others I can at least try and do the same for my own fic. Firstly, its probably overlong. Nine thousand words for a couple of dates and some sex. Compared to last year's fic that's a whole lot of words for not nearly so much plot or emotional content. Plus I feel like I got repetitive. Harry would go through a scene with Ron and then Lavender would go through almost the same thing with Parvati.

Second lots of those words are dialogue. The request ask for banter and sarcasm and I think I may have gone overboard attempting that.

But the primary failing I think was that I didn't really do a lot with Harry and Lavender being together. Their relationship seemed to be window dressing for the continuing 'zany' conversations with their firends. Even the comments I did get were along the lines of 'meddling friends are fun'. In other words, the friends where definitely the most memorable part of the fic rather than the ship itself.

Anyway with the lack of response to Smutty Claus and my own personal failure to turn anything into harryhetbigbangdespite that being like my ideal fest ever, I retroactively declare 2012 to be a terrible year for me and my writing.

On the plus side, I now know that luna_plathwrote my gift which I absolutely adore. I say 'now know' but really I was pretty much dead cert before from just the pairing, the 'sexuality' warning and the beta's initial but there i had an unfair advantage from being able to see the post where Luna asked for a beta :P

Oh Luna's fic was great: You should go read it. :) Right up your alley; with Harry and werewolves and everything.

Yeah, you expect the giftee to at least say 'thanks for making the effort for writing for me' even if they hate it. Oh well, I guess they can't all be winners.
