First Minister Ahken of the planet T’Homa looked out upon a quiet morning. The plaza inside the government building’s courtyard, looked abandoned. Ahken knew that there were numerous security devices and personnel were concealed out of sight, ready to appear at moment’s notice.
Ahken could feel in his carapace though that they would not be necessary, not today.
“Still, you’d have them there even if I didn’t want them, wouldn’t you, Bhkah?” He said quietly.
“I’m sorry, Minister?” said the being next to him.
“The guards, Bhkah.”
“Oh, indeed,” Bhkah said. “Yes, minister.”
“We need this deal with the Federation, Bhkah.”
“Yes, Minister,” repeated Bhkah, the defence secretary, prided himself on not being a frivolously chattered. Quite the opposite to Ahken on a big occasion.
“They have medicine, technology and Dilithium resources to share, they say.”
“At what cost, minister?” said Bhkah, making a heroic effort to move their conversation forward.
“Free, they say.”
“Often the most costly price, Minister.”
“Quite so.” Ahken said, his mandibles twitching in amusement at this sign of political savy. “They are sending one of their most skilled and experienced captains as a negotiator, I can only hope to be up to the challenge.”
The communiques had said to expect two officers. Captain Hazelnut Array and Commander Douglas Creif, though one alien name looked much the same as another to Ahken.
A few moments before the appointed time, Ahken and Bhkah entered the courtyard. A few moments later, there were two flashes of light, one large and one small as two things appeared out of thin air: a bipedal creature of approximately the same height as a T’Homian and a small conical device.
The biped must be the captain, a human - a strange creature of no distinguishing marks. The brief Ahken had received had said nothing about a disability, but T’Homa counted itself enlightened in that respect whatever shortcoming the device next to the captain was designed to overcome was no issue to them.
It was an odd little device though: A strut on either side of the conical main unit, echoed a bipedal being’s legs and oddly it’s lower half had been painted what Ahken presumed a human eye would see as the same exact colour as the Captain’s uniform, though a T’Homian the difference between metal and fabric was not negligible.
Ahken clicked his mandibles and recalled his manners, addressing the human officer.
“Captain Array, greetings on behalf of T’Homa, I happy to receive the Federation delegation.”
The human bared his teeth, Ahken’s briefing suggested this was a good sign, indicated friendliness.
“Greetings First Minister Ahken” he said faintly, a translator retransmitting the words in tones Ahken could more easily comprehend. “I am Commander Creif, may I present my Captain Hazelnut Array?”
With a humming sound, the device lifted off the ground and floated up to around his first officer’s shoulder height and Ahken’s eye-line.
Ahken tried to conceal his surprise as it too spoke.

“I am Captain Hazelnut Array of the USS Audacious, I am very pleased to meet you,” the Exocomp Captain said and after long years of experience they meant it.
They were on sufficiently casual terms with their first officer to transmit to them, on a wavelength that would be inaudible to the T’Homians, a comment.
“Every frinxing time, Number One! Every frinxing time.”
