Star Trek: Starfleet Academy S1E6 (Spoilers)

We return to the main plot.

Well sort of. The main plot is a two hander between Captain Ake and Nus Braka. We get reminded of Caleb's deal at the start but it's not his story and the search for his mum isn't touched on.

So the cadets go to an old wreck to do away mission practise. (As i only realised reading someone else's comment after the fact, couldn't they use a holodeck for this?) but it turns real when pirates capture the cadets. Nus Braka is known to know how to get rid of these specific pests so Ake has to enlist his help.

It plays out like standard episode with them technobabbling their way into a solution only in a normal episode they would suceed, here Braka is one step ahead. In league with the pirates and (offscreen) they ransack a weapons development starbase. And an officer and a cadet both die in heroic glory.

I did spoil myself on B'Avi's death and... well it'll be good to see how it affects the others but in and of itself. it's only okay. It suffers from classic, we're giving this guy focus and making him sympathetic for the first time, just so it might hurt when he kill him off. Kyle's reaction was suitably emotional and heart wrenching though.

Tarima... has superpowers. It reminds me of the pilot and Darem being vacuum resistant. It's just a little too superpowers and not enough scifi for me. Nothing canon breaking or wrong with it. They'd previously established betazoids are using psychic powers to shield areas of interstellar space after all but still not to my taste.

Poor SAM.  (does she have a mobile emitter, a red dwarf style holobee? she's self-generating somehow.) This is presumably the first time she's ever been in real danger or suffered actual danger. That's going to traumtising.

Over-all a tight tense episode that sets up a lot of character dynamics for the rest of the season. Decently done.
