Going to prove you can have faux-amis even within the same language! In US English we do use "homey" to mean cozy like a home, though I'm afraid that doesn't sound right applied to a person, at least not to my ear.
No, you're quite right. It wouldn't work for me either, I think it's as much me misusing the word as a cultural thing even in the british definition it's for a place not a person, lol.
