Many people had wanted to attend Luna Lovegood’s birthday party and many only because of her friendship with some very famous figures of the day, Dean Thomas had stood firm and made excuses on her behalf, telling anyone who shouldn’t really be there than Luna’s father Xenophillius’ health was too frail to host a large gathering, this had the advantage of being both polite and true. Though Dean’s interest was much more in the daughter than the father.
So gathering was restricted to just the five people who had gone into the Ministry with her, Hannah Abbot as Neville’s guest and a smattering of other people who’d been in Dumebledore’s Army and were close to her. Dean among them.
They ate and drank, they laughed and told stories, and they brought presents. Luna’s tastes ran to the small, the kitch and the meaningful over anything expensive and flashy. Dean’s gift was easily the largest she’d received.
“It’s beautiful, Dean.” Hermione said as everyone mingled after the present opening. “I didn’t know you did lanscapes.”
“Oh, well, I don’t usually,” Dean said, feeling himself got warm in the cheeks. “But it was a special case.”

It had been the summer after Dean and Luna had graduated Hogwarts after their seventh year at Hogwarts albeit non consecutively in Dean’s case. Luna had invited him out for a walk in the country side. Dean had been wary, he’d grown up in London and yeah on the run hadn’t really increased his appreciation to the great outdoors.
However, it had been Luna asking and every since they’d lived together, two outsiders in the Weasley’s home they’d felt an especially closeness. She didn’t have to ask twice.
He’d been soaked with sweat and breathing heavily as they’d crested the top of a hill and then gasp as he saw the valley stretched out beneath them, a riot of colour with flowers and vegetation is every colour and shape he could think of.
“It’s for you,” Luna said softly, standing close to his side. “Do you like them?”
“It’s beautiful Luna,” Dean said. “But why did you bring me here?”
Luna’s misty eyes looked up at wide and round.
“Well, I heard to thing to do when you like someone is to give them flowers”
Dean could have point out that usually it was a man giving a woman flowers, and that they were especially picked and sorted and arrange. Instead he just said;
“Thank you, Luna.” And he pulled her close to him, leaning down to gently press his mouth against hers.
As she melted into his kiss Dean thought he preferred her way of doing things.

“A special case?” Ron said.
“Hmm?” Dean said.
“You said it was a special case,” Ron said grinning. “Are you going to tell us the story?”
“Oh no, I couldn’t do that. It’s private.” Dean said.
Ron looked inclined to grumble but Hermione whisked him away before he could. Dean drifted back into a reverie about the thing he’d done with and to his girlfriend in that flower strewn vallye that he’d painted in meticulous detail.
