Star Trek Discovery S4 E3 (spoilers)
Dec. 5th, 2021 10:06 pmEpisode 3 of season 4. Spoilers under the cut.
So this episode has 3 plots. 1 a Qwot Milat has been stealing dilithium and murders a Starfleet officer to get it. 2 Stamets and Book go to Vulcan to figure out the wibble wobbly thing of the season. (The DMA it's named in this episode) 3 Gray is downloaded into a robot body.
You can also add a subplot with Tilly trying to find direction and subdivide plot 2 into a) Stamets trying and failing to figure out what the DMA is and b) Book coming to terms with what happened.
No of these plots are bad. Tilly is likable. Michael's mission is interesting stuff. Saru and Culber serve as decent mentors. Stamets' sensitivity is increasing and Book gets to progress.
But it's all spread way too thin. I noticed this last season, they've got plots that could make for really decent old style star trek standalone episodes but they don't have the time to them justice because of the need to service all the ongoing plots. And it still really feels like they are scrambling for direction for Tilly and to a lesser extend Michael, who doesn't really act as Captain this episode and goes off on her own in the same way she has done in previous seasons.
random minus: No bridge cast at all this week. random plus: We see what I think is a new 32nd century ship design briefly. Me likely.
